August 1 marks the beginning of World Breastfeeding Week (WBW) which has been celebrated since 1992. It commemorates the Innocenti Declaration, established by the World Health Organization (WHO) and United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) to protect and encourage breastfeeding around the world. The declaration has been a key strategy in improving health of babies and young children through optimal nutrition.

Washington Hospital is a Baby-Friendly hospital as designated by WHO and UNICEF. In celebration of WBW event, all mothers at Washington Hospital Healthcare Foundation birthing center that week will receive the gift of NursElet, which keeps a mother's shirt securely out of the way while nursing or pumping milk.

This nursing tool is invented by Fremont resident and NursElet founder Rupal Asodaria, who delivered her two children at Washington Hospital.

"World Breastfeeding Week is important because it gives us a vehicle to celebrate and bring awareness to breastfeeding - something we are dedicated to promoting every day of the year," - Rose.
